WHAT IS FOODSHARE?

Foodshare is a new international project which encourages allotments, kitchen gardeners, schools & organisations to donate surplus produce to local charities. We call it “Food Philanthropy”! Growers are also invited to “Dedicate a Bed” and donate all the harvest from that patch to the charity.

THE AIMS OF FOODSHARE

  • Reduce charities annual grocery bill by donating over £1m of food.
  • Provide the freshest, healthiest food to those that need it most.
  • Provide seasonal food that is grown locally & in most cases organically.
  • A rewarding alternative for supporters who can’t afford to donate financially.
  • Environmental benefits by reducing food waste and “food miles”.
  • Help strengthen & create bonds locally by “Growing Your Own Community”.

In order to find growers to connect with quicker, you can read the Foodshare Charity Guide to maximise your food donations.

The Guide includes newsletter/email text for you to publicise the scheme to your volunteer and supporter groups, many of whom may already grow their own produce. We also ask that you dispose of any food waste environmentally and pass on any surpluses you can’t use to other charities. Often, allotments will collect your organic waste as part of the project.

SHARING AND GROWING TOGETHER – A CASE STUDY

Milton village in Cambridgeshire started a Foodshare scheme supporting their local Children’s Hospice. In their first three months, the allotment collected and delivered over £1,000 worth of produce. The allotment will save the Hospice thousands on their annual food bill and, being down the road, provide the freshest food available.

One donation of herb plants encouraged staff at the Hospice to consider creating a Herb Garden for the children. Inspired by their efforts, Milton Primary School are dedicating a bed on their allotment for the pupils to grow food for the children at the hospice. The Foodshare “Growing to Give” project for schools is now being rolled out across the UK, working alongside the RHS and other organisations.
